Hegemony77 – Dressing Our Dolls One Stitch at a Time

Monika, who goes by Hegemony77 across the Internet, makes the most realistic and lovely outfits for a variety of dolls. She sells them on Etsy, and she has her own blog. From Hungary, Hegemony77 also is a favorite among Flickr and deviantArt photographers and artisans. From sewing to knitting, Hegemony77 makes all dolls look fabulous!

I asked Hegemony77 to share more about her world of creating such beautiful clothing for so many types of dolls. Here is what she had to say:

When did you begin making doll clothing?

I was about eight years old when I started to make doll clothes for a 10 cm doll. It was mine, but I do not know what kind of doll it was. The neighbor lady’s granddaughter owned a doll such as mine. I made clothes for her, too. She gave me fabrics in exchange for doll clothes. Then I made ??clothes for my niece’s Barbie.

How long have you been selling your clothing?

Since 2010. A friend, who knew I can sew asked me to repair clothes of her daughter’s Barbie. It occurred to me how much I loved to make doll clothes in my childhood, so I bought a Barbie and I started making doll clothes again. A lot of Barbie clothing accumulated. I was searching for amigurumi patterns when I found Etsy. Then I saw the Barbie clothes on it and I started selling my own. I saw BJDs too and later Blythes and similar, but they easily can seem ugly for an outsider.

You have many knit sweaters for sale on Etsy. How long does it take you to knit one sweater?

It takes four to six hours. It depends on the size of the doll and the knitting needles. I usually listen to the TV while I am knitting and sewing or even cooking. It may slow me down a bit.

How did you learn to knit, crochet and sew?

I was six when my mother taught me to crochet. I was eight when the girl next door taught me to knit. As a child I started to sew by hand, then I learned to sew with sewing machine at school. I am a fashion designer, patternmaker and tailor by the Graduate Occupation.

How many dolls do you own?

I own 10 dolls. One piece of each type: Barbie, Fashionista Ken, Momoko Fruit Of Passion, Monster High Ghoulia Yelps, Punkaholic People Blythe, Pullip Kaela, Dal Coco, Taeyang Wayne, Petite Blythe Cocoa Butter, 11 cm Obitsu body – Little Dal Drta head hybrid doll.

Do you have a favorite doll?

Dal is my favorite doll, because I think she resembles me the most.

Is there an item you make that is popular with your customers?

It is always changing from time to time. For example, the black hand knitted cardigan, the panties, the leather pants were popular at different times.

What is your favorite thing to make?

Any doll clothes, but maybe the hand-knitted sweaters (with my new mini circular knitting needles :) ,  and jeans with real pockets.

You knit with tiny needles you made. Will you tell us how you made them, or is it your secret?

I reduced of normal-size knitting needles. Anyone can figure out how to do this just like me.

Do you make customized clothing for people?

I make human size clothes and other things for myself and my family.

What do you do when you are not creating clothing for doll?

Friends, housework, blogging, Internet surfing, sleeping, raw material procurement…but I often think about making doll clothes, even if I’m doing something else. The doll clothes making is my full time job and it is very satisfying for me.
